Another winter of scrub management has come to an end recently. It ends in March because we are unable to do this kind of work during the bird nesting season.

Well Head County Wildlife Site (CWS), near Totternhoe, is a privately owned site with a Bridleway at the top of the bank and is designated a CWS for its flora. The Wildlife Trust recently secured funding to help restore more areas of this grassland.

So, in came the Weekday Conservation Team to help with this project…

Above: Volunteers, having already cut down scrub, are tidying up and burning what is left before the end of the day.

I don’t think I realised until this year, just how much time and resources go into maintaining grassland sites. A lot of the summer time is taken up by managing the grass, whilst a lot of the winter time is taken up by increaing the area of grassland thus increasing the summer time work!

But at the end of the day, it’s not about how much time and resources we put in, it’s about the benefit to the wildlife and the enjoyment we get from the work and seeing the benefits. Without the amazing effort of our volunteers, we wouldn’t have such diverse wildlife and habitats to enjoy!

I know we will look forward to future visits to this attractive site.
